Get Buzzed

Most people, even those of us living in Arizona, think in terms of four seasons—winter, spring, summer and fall. For those of us who work with movie studios and film for a living we have a fifth season—awards season. I know, technically its not really a season, but it’s a fun time of year to pay attention to the movies you’ve seen throughout the year, and even hear about those films you may have missed. So many times the top films up for awards are those you may not be aware of—maybe it’s a foreign film, a film that may have only been in limited release and may not have opened yet in your city, or just a small film that didn’t have a big enough advertising budget to grab your attention.

If you pay attention to some of the earlier awards shows, and some of the award accolades included in print and broadcast advertising, it makes the big award show everyone hears about, The Academy Awards®, a whole lot more interesting. And you might even want to start hosting your own Oscar pool.

Some of the shows I like to watch include the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, The Golden Globe® Awards, the Grammy Awards and of course the show of all shows The Academy Awards®. Once all the awards shows, the local film critic society awards and the nominations for The Academy Awards® are out you will start to see some of these films either first appearing in theatres or coming back—what a perfect chance to catch something you may have missed!

I always try and at least see the top films nominated for best picture and this year that’s going to be 10 films—it makes watching The Academy Awards® so much more interesting. Look for me in theatres catching up on the films I might have missed, and you can count on the fact that I will be watching The Academy Awards® , ballot in hand, to see how my opinion stacks up against those doing the official voting.
