I sat down to write this blog and then, well, forgot my awesome topic from a week ago. After nudging the ol’ brain for a time, the idea just bopped around in a shadowy corner – close but unreachable. Kind of like that crush you had in grade school. Eventually, I gave up.
As disappointing as this was, I rallied and decided that writing anything is better than staring at a blank computer screen. I have a love/hate relationship with technology and especially my computer. I love it because it’s necessary to my job. I hate it because it doesn’t talk back and, of course, fails me by freezing up toward the end of the day. On second thought, not talking back might be a good thing. I realize it’s a piece of equipment and the screen isn’t to blame for frozen moments, but it underscores the love/hate thing I’ve got going on.
I’m still amazed we’re entirely dependent on all of these machines.
The other day, for example, my
Blackberry went schizoid and wouldn’t connect to the Internet. A tragedy to be sure since this meant that while I could GPS myself… I couldn’t get directions. As a directionally challenged individual, my GPS is too often a lifesaver. (Side note: if yours does this, turn it off, take out the battery, and it will reset its tiny little brain. After doing this, everything was copacetic. Breathe.)
Then, as part of my love/hate affair, there’s my new
iPod Nano. It’s simply… magical. When I think of a song, I fire up the iPod. Another feature I love is that when I plug my iPod into my Mac, the icon is purple too. Hey you,
Apple programmers, that’s me giving you props for that sweet little feature. Very nice.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? That’s why I try to take breaks from all devices and social networks. Yes, I know, shocking. Some of my peers may actually have a physical reaction to this fact. My genetic make-up, see, leads me to easily tire of things more often than obsess. Do ya think that’s why my computer freezes? It’s bored with me?
This is part of the reason that a blend of
PR and social media fit me. They both allow me the freedom to do new things -- and regularly.
Social media moves at a rapid pace, keeping me from rolling my eyes, sighing, and cranking up the iPod. Just like in PR, social media is all about trying to make things bigger, badder and bolder. I’m into that for sure.
Now that I think about it, perhaps this odd proclivity to bore is where my love of cooking comes from. While I have favorites, I’m always trying new recipes and mixing flavors. I love the chance to put aside my temperamental thingamajigs (or computers) and use a few primitive ones (like steely knives…). The aromas, textures and the creative process bring me such joy in the kitchen…on that note, I think its time to close out and get home to make dinner!
