Looks can be deceiving

In the media world most agree that looks are very important. For those of us “behind the scenes” it’s important to look professional and many people “look” their part, but looks can be deceiving. I’ve been in the financial arena my entire career, but after meeting me, most people don’t think I’m the accounting type, especially when I joined the broadcasting business. I get “you should be in sales” a lot!

I got my feet wet in the celebrity world as the accountant for George Carlin’s east coast business manager. Working in upstate New York, booking concerts all over the east coast and Canada for a talent that lived in California, now that was interesting and kept me on my toes.

A move to Phoenix and a classified ad in the paper led me to my 20 year financial broadcasting career first with KSAZ (KTSP at the time) and then with KTVK. Besides keeping track of the finances for various television and radio stations, Internet divisions, magazines and production companies I also was involved in the planning and execution of the station and employee events. Balloon master? Pretty much after blowing up and tying thousands of them over the years. Wrap artist? You bet – from all those gifts for the children’s Christmas parties. Decorating diva? If there was a birthday, I had the goodies and the office covered. Maybe that’s why in my new job as Director of Finance with Barclay, my unofficial title has become the Party Guru! Cake anyone . . . ?
